Embark on an artistic journey at the first ever OKIR ART EXHIBIT on April 16-18, 2024 | 10:00AM to 9:00PM at the 4th Floor, Event Hall, SM Downtown, Cagayan De Oro City.
The exhibit will feature the masterpieces of local artists.
✓ Be captivated by the artsy brushes of Edris Tamano’s Okir paintings and designs.
✓ Be mesmerized by Lantong Pangcoga’s showcase of Meranaw traditional crafts.
✓ Be inspired by the story behind the weaving works of Saadira Basmala
Not only that! The event will be accompanied with cultural performances from MSU Sining Kambayoka which will perform the tales of Princess Arkat a Lawanen from the episode of Darangen Epic.
The exhibit will be mounted by the TALES of Marawi Project of the Ministry of Trade, Investments, and Tourism (MTIT) in partnership with the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (BCPCH) and the Provincial Tourism, Culture and the Arts Office of Lanao del Sur.
Carves Curves: Okir
Okir, Ukir, or Okeer /o-kir; u-kir; o’kir / is an Iranaon byword for anything done in a pleasing or beautiful manner.
When one utter a word or an expression that touches on wisdom and eloquence, or do work that is deemed decorative or artistic, it is said to be either “𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑟𝑎𝑛” that is done in Okir fashion, or “𝑖𝑛𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑟𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑟, that is done in the likeness of Okir.
Okir extends to any handiwork that pleases or impresses.
Okir is art per se.
The word Okir is a derivative of ukit (okid; okil) from Behasa Melayu which simply means “to carve” both rectilinear (straight lines) and curvilinear (curve lines) shapes.
In other words, it is to form, shape, draw, depict, illustrate, engrave, emboss, and carve forms, shapes, figures, objects, etc., on paper, wood, stone.
Metal, and other supports or art surfaces and materials, that included tools, utensils, garments, fabrics, etc. to illustrate and depict designs of sorts.
