December 11, 2023, Cagayan de oro City – Spotting the Fake This Holiday Rush: A Guide to Detecting Counterfeit Bills

Holiday rush is taken advantage of by counterfeiters as exchange of goods is quicker this season, and people are in a rush moving from holiday shopping, not noticing the cash and bills they are handed are fake.

This more commonly happens in busy areas such as the wet and dry markets of Cagayan de Oro City, but can this also happen in gasoline stations, convenience stores, and malls.

Authorities work diligently to combat counterfeiting, but it’s essential for individuals to be aware of the dangers and learn how to identify fake bills. Bangko Sentral recently urged vigilance against counterfeit ₱1000 polymer bills during holidays.

This new polymer bill was circulated last April 2022 with a long-term plan to convert all banknotes for durability and difficulty to counterfeit, however, it seems the counterfeiters are working double-time and have caught up with the new bill.

In this article, Marketmind Local warns the public to be vigilant when handling bills.

Why Counterfeiting Happens:

Counterfeiting is driven by the allure of easy profit. By creating fake bills that resemble genuine currency, counterfeiters can deceive individuals and businesses, injecting fraudulent money into the economy. This can have ripple effects, destabilizing financial systems and causing losses for unsuspecting victims such as small businesses and especially average consumers who are making ends meet.

The Rise of Sophistication:

Counterfeiters are constantly refining their techniques, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and fake bills. Modern printing technologies and readily available materials allow them to replicate the intricate details of currency, including watermarks, security threads, and even holographic features.

How to Protect Yourself:

Despite the increasing sophistication of counterfeiters, there are steps individuals you can take to protect yourself. See details posted by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

  • Know the Basics: Familiarize yourself with the security features of your local currency. This includes knowing where to look for watermarks, security threads, and other anti-counterfeiting measures.
  • Feel the Paper: Real bills have a distinct texture and feel that’s difficult to replicate. Counterfeit bills may feel different, often being smoother or more brittle.
  • Look for Inconsistencies: Examine the bill closely for any misprints, misalignments, or variations in color or size.
  • Utilize Technology: Many banks and financial institutions offer counterfeit detection machines that can quickly and accurately verify the authenticity of bills.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a bill may be counterfeit, do not attempt to spend it. Instead, report it immediately to the authorities.
  • Beyond Individual Action: Lurking in the shadows and taking advantage of the holiday rush, counterfeit bills threaten cause significant financial harm both to consumers and merchants. Governments and law enforcement agencies need to continue investing in advanced detection technology and pursue aggressive measures to shut down counterfeiting operations. Additionally, public awareness campaigns can play a crucial role in educating individuals and promoting vigilance.
