The Misamis Oriental Telephone System (MisOrTel), province’s longest-serving telecommunication service provider and once a vital part of Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental’s telecommunication, ceased operations in February 2024 after 74 years of service bringing along millions of memories with its final farewell. While its closure marks the end of an era, MisOrTel’s story offers valuable lessons for businesses navigating the ever-evolving digital age.
Engineer Marlon Libago, the officer-in-charge of Misortel, confirmed the closure, stating that the company no longer upgraded its system by purchasing equipment or acquiring new technologies.
A Legacy of Connection:
MisOrTel was established in 1950, providing landline phone services to residents and businesses in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental. For decades, it played a crucial role in connecting communities and facilitating communication. It held a monopoly for decades, a symbol of progress and communication in a bygone era. In 1998, the first cracks appeared with the arrival of new players in the market and subscriber base began to decline. Engineer Marlon Libago, recalls taking over a system with “less than a hundred subscribers.
The Shift to Digital:
The closure was attributed to substantial losses and the rise of mobile phones and internet-based communication technologies drastically changed the communication landscape. MisOrTel, primarily focused on landline services, struggled to adapt to this digital shift.
